Wildlife Artist Cat Smith with her cat

Welcome!

I’m Cat Smith, aka Art Cat. I am a wildlife portraiture artist with a leaning towards highlighting underrepresented and unusual species. My primary mediums of choice are either acrylic or ink. With each piece I strive to give my animals personality while staying consistent with the realistic nature of the animal.

I first began painting and drawing wildlife in middle school studying under internationally acclaimed wildlife and portrait artist Gregory Graham Grant. After high school I went on to graduate from Rhode Island School of Art & Design.

Currently I reside in Providence, RI working from my studio with my two mischievous feline assistants, Schmendrick and BLT. They make for never a dull moment.

Research

“ I love going out in nature photographing and sketching. I use reference photos I have taken on hikes, visits to zoos and rescues to paint wildlife portraits. For more exotic or harder to access animals I will reach out to wildlife organizations and photographers.”
